First Adjustment

What Should I Expect?

After your examination we will explain in detail how healthy your spine is, were problems exist, how long will it take to correct and how much will it cost. Our chiropractor uses gentle spinal and extremity adjustments to restore normal function to a misaligned, fixated and dysfunctional spinal joints. Adjustments are mostly painless and hold fantastic safety record.

We will explain exactly which joints are problematic and explain exactly how the chiropractic adjustment works and why it is so effective in helping millions of people around the world. The adjustment is a fast but gentle movement and the patient often hears a clicking sound. This is simply gas releasing from the joint as we deliver the specific movement to restore correct alignment and function of the fixed and irritated joint. This removes stress, restores correct biomechanics and removes nerve interference so that your body can function and heal normally.

Is it safe?

After years of university training and clinical experience, each chiropractor becomes highly skilled in the delivery of a variety of adjustive technic. The direction and force used in a Chiropractic adjustment is highly tuned to deliver the safest and most specific adjustment possible. Chiropractic has an excellent record for safety and patient satisfaction. There are many ways to adjust the spine. Usually the chiropractor’s hands or a specially designed instrument delivers a brief and highly-accurate thrust. Some adjusting methods are quick, whereas others require a slow and constant pressure.

How to Help Your Healing

  • Ice

-Remember to Ice any tender areas after your adjustment. Apply an ice pack wrapped in kitchen roll or in a thin tea towel for 15 to 20 minutes. This should be done as soon as possible, this can be repeated every two hours depending on your pain level. This will help you reduce and stop using any pain medication you might be taking.

  • Wallet

-Never ever wear your wallet in your back pocket, this will completely misalign your pelvic bones as you sit down. This can have devastating effects on any progress we achieve when adjusting your spine.

  • Ladies

-High heels are bad for your posture. They pitch your centre of gravity forwards causing anterior pelvic tilt, increased lumbar curve and placing abnormal pressure on your lower lumbar discs and joints.

-Avoid crossing your legs; when this is done for long periods of time it can completely misalign the pelvis causing a chronic recurrent problem. Cross your ankles instead.

-When carrying a handbag you must alternate between each shoulder. Make sure you minimise the weight as much as possible.

  • Sleeping

-You need a harder mattress for good spinal health. A soft bed will cause your pelvis and lower back to sink leading to abnormal stress that will stretch important joint capsules, ligaments and discs.

-NEVER SLEEP ON YOUR FRONT, this will put huge pressure on your neck as it is forced into rotation and extension. Sleep on your back or your side. Try to avoid sleeping on your side if you are experiencing shoulder problems. When you sleep on your back you can usually use one pillow, in some cases were patient’s have a abnormal increase in there kyphosis they may require more (speak with our chiropractor for clarification) . When sleeping on your side usually two will help support your neck, as a rule of thumb you need your thoracic spine (upper back) in line with your cervical spine (neck) so adjust pillow height as needed.

– It is well known that getting good rest will vastly increase your healing time, so make sure you get plenty of sleep each night.

– Patient’s suffering with pelvic and lower back issues can reduce pain by placing a pillow between their knees when side sleeping. This allows the pelvis to stay in its natural position of alignment thus increasing healing time.

– Shoulder issues can be very difficult and frustrating when it comes to getting good rest. Avoid sleeping on the aggravated shoulder and prop it up with a pillow to stop it slumping forwards.

  • Driving

-When driving make sure you take regular breaks and use cruise control as often as possible. The repetitive use of the pedals can irritate and misalign the right sacroiliac joint leading to recurrent problems.

– Most cars have very poor lumbar support which makes your normal lumbar curve round out into a very unhealthy position. The best thing to do is purchase a lumbar support which will immediately support the natural curve and allow the rest of your posture to be in a more normal position.

-Keep the seat straight and bring it close enough to the steering wheel so that your arms are relaxed.

– Getting into the car sit down first, pivot through your bum and swing both legs in at the same time. When you get out swing both feet out together and stand up.

  • Lifting Technique

Avoid lifting with your back, always use your legs to do the work. Bend with your knees, Keep the spine very straight and contract your core muscles, grip the load keeping it very close to your body, now let your legs do all the work. If you feel your back bend with the effort stop immediately, the load is far too heavy and you need help. If you have a problem in your back DO NOT LIFT HEAVY LOADS!

  • Drink Plenty of Water

-Water is essential for a well functioning body, without water we can only survive for 3 days. It is essential for good general health, the health of joints and also for healing.

  • Exercise

-Avoid exercise except for mild to moderate walking at the beginning of your care. You will be given specific exercises for your condition once your spine starts to normalise, this is always different for each case. Doing certain exercise on an abnormal spine can reinforce the misalignment and worsen your problem.
