Lower Back Pain Treatment in Dublin 2

Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons patients attend Dublin 2 Chiropractic. It can develop suddenly or gradually and may be associated with stiffness, restricted movement or pain travelling into the buttock or leg.

There are many possible causes of lower back pain, including joint and muscle problems, disc-related conditions and irritation of spinal nerves. Identifying the likely source of your symptoms is an important part of deciding which treatment approach will be most suitable.

At our clinic on Merrion Square, we regularly assess and treat patients with both acute and persistent lower back pain. Treatment may include chiropractic care, exercise and, particularly for some disc-related problems, non-surgical spinal decompression.

What Can Cause Lower Back Pain?

Lower back pain can have many different causes. Common examples include:

  • Joint or muscle irritation
  • Strains and sprains
  • Disc bulges or disc herniations
  • Degenerative changes in the spine
  • Irritation or compression of a spinal nerve
  • Spinal stenosis

Pain may remain around the lower back or may travel into the buttock or leg. When a spinal nerve is irritated or compressed, symptoms can include sciatica, tingling, numbness or weakness.

Your symptoms and physical examination help us identify the likely source of the problem and determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

Your Lower Back Pain Assessment

Your first appointment begins with a consultation to understand your symptoms, how the problem developed and how it is affecting your movement, work and everyday activities.

This is followed by a physical examination, which may include assessment of your lower back and hip movement, spinal and joint function, orthopaedic testing and neurological testing where appropriate.

The examination helps us identify the likely cause of your lower back pain and allows us to recommend a treatment plan based on your individual findings.

Occasionally, examination findings may indicate that a lower back problem requires further investigation or another form of care, which is one reason we carry out an appropriate examination before beginning treatment.

Chiropractic Treatment for Lower Back Pain

Treatment is tailored to the likely cause of your lower back pain, your examination findings and how your symptoms are affecting your movement and daily activities.

Chiropractic treatment: Chiropractic adjustments and mobilisation can be used to improve movement in the lower back and surrounding joints, reduce pain and improve function.

Exercise and movement advice: Exercises may be recommended to help restore movement, strength and confidence as your symptoms improve.

Spinal decompression: When lower back pain is associated with a disc-related problem or nerve irritation, non-surgical spinal decompression may form part of the treatment programme.

Your progress is reassessed throughout care so that treatment can be adjusted according to how your pain, movement and function are responding.

Lower Back Pain and Sciatica

Lower back pain can sometimes occur alongside pain, tingling or numbness travelling into the buttock or leg. When these symptoms result from irritation or compression of a nerve root in the lower spine, this is commonly described as sciatica.

When leg symptoms are present, the examination may include neurological testing to help identify whether a spinal nerve is involved and guide the most appropriate treatment approach.
